Making an Election Happen
UPDATED Feb, 11 2009 9:08pm
I just got off the phone with the Municipal Council Executive Director of Provo and she is of the opinion that once a neighborhood chair has been elected the only way for an election to happen is if the neighborhood chair wishes to quit or we forcibly remove them through the petition and election.
This is of course contrary to the very fabric of our legal system and I look forward to sitting in court with our Executive Director and letting a judge instruct us all on the finer points of the law.
That being said, while I will continue to pursue the right to elect our own officials the best thing to do is to execute a petition to force the election regardless those, likely to be lengthly, legal proceedings.
Using a Petition to Remove Neighborhood Chairs
In Provo, the city code is just as clear about using a petition as it is about having regular elections (alas not all of us read these things the same). We need 50 signatures from residents of the neighborhood and 75% of them must be present at the election.
So start your engines petitioners, we need to have this put together within the next two days. Sign up for the news letter by putting your email address into the sidebar.

UPDATE: Cameron spoke with Judy, our neighborhood chair, and Judy has agreed that she best represents the neighborhood by doing everything possible to withdraw the application to downzone! We'll have more details soon when everything is settled.

That's outrageous! How is it
Submitted by happyhalloweenman on Tue, 02/10/2009 - 22:02.That's outrageous! How is it that anyone in any government position can hold an indefinite term in office aside from the Supreme Court Justices?! We'll get those petitions signed and show that Municipal Council Executive Director who really who has a say in our neighborhood! Dan, you're the best. Keep up the good work!
Dan, thanks for all the work

Its on the county website too, plus thats what the city coucil office told me as well. This website is awesome! Thank for all the good work with it! We'll see you all tomorrow.

Submitted by Randy (not verified) on Wed, 02/11/2009 - 20:23.This effort is a fraud. The things you've told people about the downzoning is a pile of crap, and you have no idea how much long term damage you would be doing by ousting your current neighborhood chair. I'd like to know where all of you were when she was fighting (successfully) to get Action Target moved out of your neighborhood. She spent 2 years of her life working to get them out. She battled against a hostile Mayor, state agencies that could have cared less, and won. Do you really think any of you has 2 years to spend getting rid of a chemical spewing, law regarding business that was probably responsible for more cases of cancer than you can imagine in that end of the neighborhood. Your efforts are going to do a lot more harm than good.

Submitted by Anon (not verified) on Wed, 02/18/2009 - 20:15.Randy, I too can see where you're coming from. Yes she has done a great job. Can you agree however, that when the person who's only job is to represent the citizens is doing the exact opposite you too would be pretty frustrated? That was our issue here. It wasn't anything personal. I am very VERY thankful for Judy and her hard work and have contacted her and shared that gratitude to her. We were just upset because we felt mis-represented and were trying to fufill our right to be appropriatly represented. Again, now that she has resolved the issue we can all agree that she is a wonderful representative of our neighborhood.
